Poetry to Remember, Ep.4 – Immortality – by Clare Harner
An amazing poem.
This poem is another of my favorites.
Unlike many poems that I can think of this one is mired in claims that the author is either unknown or notably Mary Elizabeth Frye who made xeroxed copies of the poem with her name attached. She was first wrongly cited as the author of the poem in 1983, and she herself in her obituary, asserted that her authorship was “undisputed” and confirmed by Dear Abby.
In the version published in The Gypsy of December 1934 (page 16), under the title “Immortality” and followed by the author’s name and location: “CLARE HARNER, Topeka, Kan.” The indentation and line breaks are as given there. Plagiarism is very wrong/serious and it took much time to clear up the ownership and also the way in which the original poet wished the lineation.
