May 1940

I was in France in World War Two,
the foe was drawing near,
the order came ‘Evacuate!
and pack up all your gear’.

Our destination was Dunkirk
which was beside the sea,
if we were lucky, there we’d find
a ship to help us flee.

We started off in transport trucks
along the country lanes,
but Germans soon discovered us
and bombed us from their planes.

We weren’t supposed to leave the trucks
unless the C.O said.
To hell with that! If we stayed put
we knew that we’d be dead.

When fighter planes came into view
we’d not stay or dither,
no waiting for the order then,
we just dived for cover.

The stukas kept bombarding us,
a cease fire there was none,
attacking us with guns and bombs,
soon all the trucks were gone.

So then we had to go on foot
